Peptides in Skincare
Peptides and how they’re changing the face of skincare.
The word peptide is becoming more and more familiar in daily conversation. it seems that it is in more and more skin care lines and products, but what exactly are they, and what can they do for the skin?
What are peptides?
Physically, peptides are short chains of amino acids. When multiple amino acids are grouped together into a chain, a peptide is created. Peptides are also described as protein fragments. proteins such as collagen and elastin are compromised of proteins. Amino acids make up peptides which in turn make up all of the proteins of the skin.
Peptides are found naturally in our bodies but many of the peptides in skincare are derived from plant sources such as rice, yeast or wheat. For maximum stability and effect, they are broken down into amino acids and then rebuilt into the correct form for for the intended results they are intended for.
A peptide can be thought of as a cell communicator. it signals certain cells to act in certain ways. As we age, we all know that the structure and function of our skin begins to change and decline. peptides are able to make our skin act more like it did when we were younger. Each peptide has a different job, and so one peptide can not address all concerns. Some help with pigmentation, while others address wrinkles, cell renewal, hydration, or other skin issues. This is why it is important to use the correct combination of peptides to address all of your concerns.
Benefits of Peptides:
One of the greatest benefits of peptides is their ability to brovide amazing results without being invasive or causing irritation. Ingredients such as benzoyl peroxide, retinol, hydroquinone, to name just three are well-known in the skincare industry for their respective purposes, however each is known for potential irritation. Peptides are amazing in that they can be used alongside such ingredients to enhance the results, or used alone with phenomenal results for those who cannot tolerate more aggressive treatments.
Neoropeptides are an amazing thing in themselves. Know as the “Botox-like” peptides, they are able to relax the muscle contractions that cause fine lines and wrinkles, helping to reduce their appearance and progression.
Peptides can boost collagen and elastin, thickening and strengthening the skin. They can be used as inhibitors to block and lighten hyperpigmentation. And all of this with naturally occurring, non-irritating ingredients.
